옆집 사람 (K-movie, Next door)

이 영화에 참여한 감독, 배우 이름들이 낯설다.

주요 배우 3명 중 얼굴을 보고 딱 알겠다 싶은 사람은 이정현, <미스타 션사인>에서 일본 하사역을 실제 일본인처럼 소화해서 국적을 의심했던 배우였다. 이 영화에서는 후반부에 짧지만 강렬한 연기를 한다. 이 배우는 유해진처럼 다양한 감초 연기를 통해 크게 성공할 거 같은 예감이 든다. 

나머지 두 배우는 찾아봐도 잘 모르겠다.

오동민이라고 주인공은 2008년에 데뷔해서 15년 동안 무명 배우였다고 해도 무방할 정도의 이력이었다. 이력을 살펴보니 유연석이 출연했던 <사랑의 이해>에서 오랜 여자친구를 두 집안의 경제 차이 때문에 차고 본인과 형편이 비슷한 부유한 여자를 배우자로 선택했지만 전 여자친구를 못 잊어 다시 만나다가 결국 파혼당한 은행 동기 역이었다. 낯선 얼굴이었지만 연기는 안정적으로 잘했던 거 같다.
이 영화에서 그의 연기는 오랜 내공이 아니면 소화할 수 없는 생활 연기의 절정이었다. 거의 모든 장면이 한정적 장소에서 벌어지는데 자칫하면 지루해질 수 있었다. 배우들의 디테일한 연기에 조금이라도 빈틈이 보이면 흐름이 끊겨서 관객의 집중력이 흐려질 수 있는 전개였다. 
처음 그의 이력을 몰랐을 때는 괴물 신인이 나타났다고 생각했지만 15년 동안의 경력이 그냥 생기는 건 아니구나 싶었다. 벌써 37살이지만 앞으로 정말 기대되는 배우이다.

극중 고현민을 연기한 최희진 역은 처음 보는 배우였는데 놀랍도록 연기를 천연덕스럽게 잘했다. 이 여자는 정체는 뭐지?  끝까지 궁금증을 불러일으키는 역할이었다. 그녀 역에 대한 명확한 정의를 내릴 수 없어서 계속 추리하다 보면 영화가 막바지에 와 있었던 거 같다. 극의 긴장감을 계속 유지하는데 결정적인 역할을 한 배우다.

결말에 대한 확장성이 어마무시하다. 
USB에 담긴 내용이 과연 무엇일까?
내게 이 영화가 결말을 향해가면서 가장 주요 관심사는 주인공이 정신줄을 끝까지 놓지 않고 5년 동안 준비한 시험이 허사가 되지 않기 위해 제 시간에 원서접수를 할 수 있는가 없는가였다.
장르는 스릴러지만 블랙코미디가 아닐까 싶다.

첫 장편 데뷔작에 첫 시나리오가 이렇게 인상 깊을 수 있는지 감독 염지호에 대해 감탄했다.  ‘옆집사람’은 제40회 브뤼셀국제판타스틱영화제를 비롯해 제26회 판타지아국제영화제, 제21회 뉴욕아시안영화제, 제42회 하와이국제영화제 등 유수의 영화제에 연이어 초청받으며 작품성과 화제성을 인정받고 있다.

놀랍게도 제작사는 한국예술종합학교 영상원(K'ARTS)이다. 이건 뭔가 작게 시작했는데 참신해서 주목 받고 있는 영화가 아닌가 싶다.

솔직히 넥플릭스 영화 순위 2위여서 호기심 반 기대 반으로 보기 시작했다. 영화 <길복순>이 1위지만 개인적으로 크게 실망한지라 그보다 순위가 낮은 영화를 선택한다는 것은 제법 큰 모험이었다. 그리고 <길복순>처럼 큰 기대작에 실망하면서 요즘 한국 영화가 지나치게 자극적인 소재에 성공 공식만을 따라가는 안정 제일주의 대기업 느낌이어서 싫었는데 이렇게 <옆집 사람>과 같은 유망한 스타트업 같은 참신한 작품이 나와줘서 고맙다. 

이 영화는 꼭 추천하고 싶다.
이 영화를 보면서 한국 영화계가 한정된 인재풀로 연명하고 있는 게 아닐까 우려했던 내가 부끄러웠다. 앞으로 한국 영화계가 인재들이 무궁무진해서 미래가 더 기대되는 화수분과 같다는 사실을 의심하지 않을 것이다.

이런 영화를 끊임없이 생산해 내는 한국 영화가 무척 자랑스럽다.


The names of director and actors who participated in this movie are unfamiliar.

Among the three main actors, Lee Jung-hyun, who seemed to know the face of the actor, was suspicious of his nationality by playing the role of a Japanese sergeant like a real Japanese in <Mr. Sunshine>.
In this movie, there is a short but intense performance in the second half. I have a feeling that this actor will succeed greatly through various licorice acting like Yoo Hae-jin.

I can't know the other two actors.

The main character, Oh Dong-min, debuted in 2008 and was an unknown actor for 15 years. Looking at his history, he played the co-worker of Yu Yeon-seok in <The interest of Love>. In the drama, he chose a rich woman as his spouse due to economic differences between the two families, but he ended up breaking up after meeting his ex-girlfriend again. He had an unfamiliar face, but his acting was stable and good.
His performance in the film was the culmination of a life performance that could not be performed without long experience. Almost every scene takes place in a limited place, which could have become boring. 
It was a development of story in which if there was any gap in the actors' detailed acting, the flow could be cut off and the audience's concentration could be blurred.
When I first didn't know his history, I thought a monster rookie appeared, but I thought 15 years of experience didn't just happen. He's already 37 years old, but he's an actor I'm looking forward to.

Choi Hee-jin, who played Ko Hyun-min in the movie, was a first-time actor, and she acted surprisingly well. Who is this woman? It was a role that aroused curiosity until the end. I couldn't make a clear definition of her role, so if I kept reasoning, the movie was coming to an end. She is an actor who played a decisive role in maintaining the tension of the play.

The scalability of the ending is enormous.
What is the content of the USB?
For me, the main concern as the movie approached its end was whether the main character could apply on time so that the five-year-long test he had prepared wouldn't be in vain.
The genre is thriller, but I think it's black comedy.

I admired director Yeom Ji-ho for how the first scenario could be so impressive in his first feature debut. <Next Door> has been invited to prestigious film festivals such as the 40th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, the 26th Fantasia International Film Festival, the 21st New York Asian Film Festival, and the 42nd Hawaii International Film Festival.

Surprisingly, the production company is the Korea National University of Arts (K'ARTS). This movie started small, but I think it's a movie that's drawing attention because it's novel.

To be honest, it's ranked second in the Netflix movie rankings, so I started watching it half curious and half excited. It was a pretty big adventure to choose <Next door> with a lower ranking than <Gilboksoon>, because I was personally disappointed <Gilboksoon>. I was disappointed by the big expectations of <Gilboksoon>, and I hated it because it felt like a stable-first conglomerate that only follows the success formula with overly stimulating materials, but I am grateful for <Next door> like a promising start-up.

I really want to recommend this movie.
Watching this movie, I was ashamed of myself for worrying that the Korean film industry might be surviving with a limited pool of talent. In the future, there will be no doubt that the Korean film industry is like a pot of flowers with more expectations for the future due to its endless talent.

I am very proud of Korean movies that produce such movies constantly.
