더 글로리, 김은숙 작가의 갓김치 (The Glory)

김은숙 작가는 믿고 본다는 말이 가장 잘 어울리는 장인이 아닌가 싶다. 그러나 이미 여러 작품을 통해 소비된 이미지가 있어서인지 김은숙 그리고 송혜교의 조합은 이미 이름만 들어도 식상했다. 후속을 간절히 바라는 마음으로 기다리는 설렘보다는 분명 이름값에 돈질이 들어갔을 거란 짐작과 두 클래스가 작은 부침을 이겨내기 위해 심기일전했을 거란 기대감이 있었다.

뚜껑을 열어보니 기대 그 이상이었다. 그동안에 김은숙 작가의 드라마는 비싸지만 잘 익은 맛김치를 먹는듯한 느낌이었다. 돈이 아깝지 않은 늘 그 감칠맛을 유지하는 김치. 이번 더 글로리는 김은숙 작가에겐 모험일 수 있는 그동안의 김치와 결이 다른 톡쏘지만 맛있는 갓김치를 먹는 느낌이었다.

웨이브의 약한 영웅이란 드라마를 보면서 학폭의 심각성이 이미 성인세계를 넘어섰다는 생각이 들었었다. 그러나 약한 영웅이 유명하지 않은 배우들의 성공이라면 더글로리는 한국을 대표하는 작가와 배우의 만남이기 때문에 그 사회적 파장은 클 것이라 생각하고 더해서 학교폭력에 대해 제대로 경각심을 일으켜줬으면 좋겠다. 그래서 이번 더 글로리는 재미를 넘어선 한국의 사회문제들 - 부의 세습, 소외계층, 그리고 학교폭력 등-을 표면 위로 이슈화시켜 줬으면 좋겠다.

잘 짜여진 촘촘한 스토리에 제 옷들을 잘 챙겨 입은 캐릭터들이 살아 움직이는 작품임에 틀림없다. 다만 주여정 역을 맡은 이도현과 송혜교가 나이차 때문인지 예전 해품달에서 김수현과 한가인을 연상케 했다. 주여정역에 이규형이라는 배우를 썼으면 좀더 잘 어울렸을 거 같다. 특히 마지막 키스신이 이렇게 너무도 어색했다. 오히려 문동은과 하도영이 더 설레는 조합이었다.

바둑을 풀어내는 서사가 넘 좋았다. 집을 탄탄히 짓고 상대의 집을 무너뜨리는 것. 건축가가 꿈이었던 주인공에게 그런 맥락에서 접근하는 포인트가 인상적이었다.

첫회 갑자기 무당이 나오는 부분에서 잠깐 우려했다. 그냥 자극적인 맛들의 짬뽕이 되어버릴까 봐. 그래서 맛의 한계치를 넘어서서 아무 맛도 느끼지 못할까 봐. 그러나 그것은 잠시의 우려였다. 현실과 좀 떨어진 불가사의한 믿기 힘든 일들, 예를 들면 죽었던 친구의 환영을 보는 것 등이 무속이란 종교적 일면을 활용함으로써 어색하지 않게 다가왔던 거 같다. 작가가 칼을 든 권선징악, 선택적 징벌에 대한 의구심. 문동은을 괴롭혔던 예를 들면 우발적 살인일지라도 그것을 저지른 사람은 죄를 받지 않는 점, 게다가 하도영이 예솔이를 위해 하는 살인은 정당한가. 가장 벌을 받아야 할 연진이는 살려두고 그보다는 덜한 죄를 저지른 2명은 죽음의 벌을 받는 것은 맞을까. 그러나 대체로 사이다 결말이어서 행복했던 거 같다.

내가 살아온 세상은 한국이 아니었나 싶을 때가 있다. 기사나 드라마에서 존재하는 지옥같은 세상과는 거리가 있었다. 물론 소소하게 작은 편견들에 상처받을 때는 있었지만 그냥 살만한 세상이었다. 오히려 세상의 편견보다 나와의 싸움에서 이기지 못하고 절망할 때가 많았다.

만약 세상에서 잠깐 방관자로 살아온 세월 동안 이토록 세상이 많이 변했다면 변화를 위해 한 몫하고 싶다. 앞으로 글쓰기를 게을리하지 않아서 김은숙 작가와 같은 세상에 화두를 던질 만큼 영향력이 있는 작가의 반열에 올라보고 싶다.

Writer Kim Eun-sook seems to be the best craftsman to trust and watch. However, the combination of Kim Eun-sook and Song Hye-kyo was already boring just by hearing the name, perhaps because there was already an image consumed through various works. Rather than the excitement of waiting with eager hope for a follow-up, there was an expectation that the two classes would have changed their minds to overcome the small ups and downs.

When I opened the lid, it was more than I expected. In the meantime, Kim Eun-sook's drama seemed to be eating Flavored Kimchi, which was expensive but ripe. Flavored Kimchi that always maintains its savory taste, not a waste of money. This time, The Glory felt like eating sweet but delicious Gat Kimchi, which was different from the Flavored Kimchi that could be an adventure for writer Kim Eun-sook.

Watching the drama <Weak Hero Class 1>, I thought that the seriousness of the school violence had already exceeded the adult world. However, if the <Weak Hero Class 1> is the success of unknown actors, <The Glory> is a meeting between writers and actors representing Korea, so I think the social impact will be great, and I hope you will be properly alert to school violence. So I hope that this time, <The Glory> will bring Korean social problems beyond fun - hereditary succession of wealth, underprivileged people, and school violence - to the surface.

It must be a living work of characters who are well-organized and well-dressed in a dense story. However, Lee Do-hyun, who play Joo Yeo-jung and Song Hye-kyo were reminiscent of Kim Soo-hyun and Han Ga-in in <Moon embracing the Sun>, perhaps because of the age difference. I think it would have been better if I had written an actor named Lee Kyu-hyung in the role of Joo Yeo-jung. Especially, the last kiss scene was so awkward. Rather, Moon Dong-eun and Ha Do-young were a more exciting combination.

I loved the narrative of solving baduk. Building a solid house and destroying the other person's house. The point of approaching the main character, whose dream was to be an architect, in that context was impressive.

In the first episode, I was worried for a moment when a shaman suddenly appeared. I'm afraid it'll just become spicy jjamppong. So I'm afraid I'll not taste anything beyond the limit of the taste. But that was a moment of concern. It seems that mysterious unbelievable things that are a little far from reality, such as seeing the vision of a dead friend, have come not awkwardly by utilizing the religious aspect of shamanism. Goodwill punishment, selective punishment by the writer with a knife. For example, even if it is an accidental murder that bothered Moon Dong-eun, the person who committed it is not guilty, and is the murder that Ha Do-young does for Yesol justified. Is it true that Yeon-jin, who should be punished the most, will be spared and the two who have committed less crimes will be punished by death. However, I think I was happy because it was mostly a cider ending.

There are times when I think that the world I have lived in was Korea. It was far from the hellish world that existed in articles and dramas. Of course, there were times when I was hurt by small prejudices, but it was just a world to live in. Rather, there were many times when I couldn't win the fight with myself and despair rather than prejudice in the world.

If the world has changed so much in the years of living as a bystander for a while, I would like to play a part in making a difference. In the future, I want to be in the ranks of writers who are influential enough to make a topic of conversation in the same world as Kim Eun-sook by not to neglect writing.
